The short version
- We collect what you tell us: your name, email, an optional phone number, details about your dog, and your dog’s care plan.
- We save it in our secure database, so your plan, reminders and tracking are there every time you come back, on any device.
- We use it to send you tips, reminders and resources that fit your dog.
- We do not sell your personal information to other companies.
- We may share or sell anonymized statistics about dogs in general, such as the most common health concerns. These never include your name, contact details or your dog’s name. You can ask to be left out.
- If Dog Care Wiki is ever bought, the new owner takes over the information we hold, and must keep the promises in this policy.
- You can see, correct, download or delete your information at any time.
1. Who we are
Dog Care Wiki runs the website https://dogcarewiki.com. We are a global company, serving dog owners around the world. In this policy, “we” and “us” mean Dog Care Wiki.
Questions about your privacy go to hello@dogcarewiki.com. A real person reads every message.
2. What we collect, and why
Everything in this section comes from you, or from your browser when you visit. You choose what to share. Most questions are optional, and you can leave any optional field blank.
2.1 About you
| What | Required? | Why we ask |
|---|---|---|
| Email address | Yes | To run your account and send the updates you asked for |
| First name | Yes | So our emails and reminders can greet you properly |
| Mobile or WhatsApp number | No | Only if you want text updates and reminders, or want to verify your number |
| General location, such as country and state | No | So tips, seasonal reminders and resources fit where you live |
| Features you want, from a short list | No | So we know what to build next |
| Your email and text permission choices | Yes | So we only contact you the way you agreed |
2.2 Your mobile number and text messages
Giving us a mobile number is optional.
- Email permission and text permission are separate. Each has its own tick box, and both start unticked. Saying yes to email does not mean yes to texts.
- What we text. If you tick the text box, we may send you product updates and the care reminders you set.
- Message rates may apply, depending on your phone plan.
- Where your number goes. We save it in our database and in Brevo, the service that sends our emails and texts, as part of your contact record.
- Changing your mind. To stop texts at any time, email hello@dogcarewiki.com and we will take you off our text list.
Verifying your phone number is a different thing, and it is not permission to text you. If you ask for a six-digit code, we send it once by text, just to confirm the number is yours. The code works for 10 minutes. We store it only in scrambled form, and delete it once it is used or has expired.
2.3 About your dog, and your dog’s care plan
When you set up your dog’s profile at dogcarewiki.com/dog-profile and use the care planner at dogcarewiki.com/dog-health-tracker, we save what you enter to your Dog Care Wiki account. This is what makes the planner useful over time.
Your dog’s profile can include:
- name, breed, age or birthday, sex, weight and size;
- whether your dog is spayed or neutered, and whether you adopted them;
- life stage, such as puppy, adult or senior;
- how many dogs you care for, and whether this is your first dog;
- what you most want help with, such as skin or stomach problems, a new puppy, or an older dog.
Your dog’s care plan can include:
- the care areas you want help with, such as digestion, skin and coat, or mobility;
- symptoms you choose to log;
- vaccinations and vet visits;
- medications, vitamins and parasite care;
- grooming and other care tasks;
- what your dog eats, and changes in weight over time;
- the reminders and dates you set.
We will add new questions as we add new features. Each one will say why we are asking.
Why we save it. Saving your dog’s information lets us:
- keep your plan ready on any device you sign in from;
- send vaccination, medication and care reminders on time;
- help you spot patterns, such as symptoms that follow a change in food;
- send tips and guides that fit your dog’s age, breed and needs;
- point you to the right resources, such as a guide, a checklist, or a sign that it is time to call your vet.
It stays private. Your dog’s profile and care plan sit behind your account sign-in. Other people who use the same device cannot see them unless they sign in as you.
Dog Care Wiki does not diagnose or treat dogs. Our tips and reminders support your vet’s advice. They do not replace it.
2.4 When you apply to be a podcast guest
On dogcarewiki.com/be-a-guest we ask for your first and last name, email, an optional phone number, your role, an optional organization, the topic you would like to discuss, your experience, and an optional website or social profile link. We use this to review your application and contact you about it.
The newsletter box on that form is optional and separate. We only add you to our mailing list if you tick it.
2.5 What we collect automatically
Bot protection. Our forms use Cloudflare Turnstile to stop automated spam. Turnstile checks your browser and the internet address (IP address) you connect from. We do not keep your IP address. We keep a scrambled version of it, made with a secret key, so we can limit how many forms one connection sends in a short time.
Your privacy choices. When you choose “Essential only”, “Analytics only” or allow marketing, your browser remembers your choice.
Analytics, only if you allow it. If you allow analytics, Google Analytics records which pages you visit, roughly where you are (city or region, worked out by Google from your IP address), and what kind of device and browser you use. We see this as totals and trends. We use it to work out which guides help people.
Advertising measurement, only if you allow it. If you allow marketing, Meta (the company behind Facebook and Instagram) can record visits to our pages. We use this to measure our ads and to show Dog Care Wiki ads to people who have visited the site.
Both are off until you choose. We never send your name, email address, phone number, your dog’s details or anything you type into a form to Google or Meta.
2.6 What we do not collect
- We do not ask for your home address or your exact location.
- We do not take payments, so we hold no card or bank details.
- We do not ask for information about your own health.
3. How we use your information
- To run your account and save your dog’s profile and care plan.
- To send the reminders you set.
- To send tips, guides and resources that fit your dog.
- To send emails and texts you agreed to.
- To send a one-time verification code, only if you ask for one.
- To review podcast guest applications and reply to them.
- To understand common dog health concerns and owner needs, using anonymized, grouped data (see section 5.2).
- To decide which tools and guides to build next.
- To keep the site safe from spam and abuse.
- To measure our ads, only if you allowed marketing.
- To meet our legal duties, and to protect our rights and our users if needed.
When you create an account and save your dog’s information, you agree to us using it for these purposes. Where the law asks for a legal basis, we rely on that agreement, and on your consent for marketing emails, texts, analytics and advertising. We rely on our legitimate interests for keeping the site secure and improving it. You can withdraw consent at any time (see section 8).
4. Who we work with
We use a small number of service providers. They handle information for us, under contract, and may only use it to provide their service to us.
| Provider | What they do for us | What they receive |
|---|---|---|
| Cloudflare | Hosts the website, runs bot protection, and runs our database | Everything you save with us, and your IP address for the bot check |
| Brevo | Our contact and email service. Sends our emails, texts and reminders | Your name, email, phone number if you gave one, your choices, and the dog details needed to send reminders and tips that fit your dog |
| Runs Tag Manager and, if you allow it, Google Analytics | Analytics data described in section 2.5. No names, contact details or dog details | |
| Meta | Ad measurement and ad audiences, only if you allow marketing | Page visits described in section 2.5. No names, contact details or dog details |
| Namecheap | Forwards email sent to our @dogcarewiki.com addresses | The emails you send us |
If we add or change a provider, we will update this list.
We may also share information if the law requires it, for example a valid court order, or to protect someone’s safety.
5. Do we sell your information?
We do not sell your personal information to other companies. We do not sell your dog’s profile or care plan in any form that points back to you.
In plain terms: no company can buy your name, your email, your phone number, or your dog’s records from us.
There is one time your information changes hands: if Dog Care Wiki itself is bought or merged. Then the new owner owns the information we hold, and must keep the promises in this policy. Section 6 explains how that works.
There are two more things we want you to know about.
5.1 Advertising cookies
Some US state laws count it as a “sale” or “sharing” of personal information when a website lets an advertising company collect data through it, even if no money changes hands. On Dog Care Wiki this only happens if you allow marketing in our privacy choices. If you choose “Essential only” or “Analytics only”, it does not happen. You can change your choice at any time with the button in section 8.
5.2 Anonymized insights about dogs
Thousands of care plans, taken together, can show useful things about dogs in general. For example:
- the most common health concerns for different breeds, sizes and ages;
- the problems owners most want help with;
- how often certain symptoms show up alongside certain foods;
- which vaccinations and care tasks owners track most;
- how these patterns differ between countries or regions;
- how many dogs households care for.
We build these insights from the profiles and care plans in our database, after removing everything that could identify you. We may use them to write better guides. We may also share, license or sell them to others, such as pet health researchers, veterinary groups, animal welfare organizations, or pet care companies.
These insights describe dogs and owners as a group. They never describe you. Every insight we share will be:
- grouped, meaning it covers many households at once;
- stripped of anything that names you: no names, emails, phone numbers, IP addresses or dogs’ names;
- only reported for groups of at least 50 households, so a small group cannot point to anyone;
- no more precise than country, or state or province, for location.
Anyone who receives these insights must agree in writing not to try to work out who is behind them. We will not try either.
We do not share or sell insights today. Before we start, we will update this policy and email everyone on our list.
How to be left out. Email hello@dogcarewiki.com from the address on your account, with “Leave me out” in the subject line. A person on our team removes your dog’s information from every insight we build from then on, and replies within 30 days to confirm it is done.
6. If Dog Care Wiki changes hands
Dog Care Wiki is an independent company. One day it may join a larger company, be bought, merge with another business, or sell some of what it owns. If that happens, the new owner would own the information we hold. That includes your contact details, your choices, and your dog’s profile and care plan.
We know that is a lot to trust someone with. So these promises go with your information:
- The new owner must keep the promises in this policy for the information they receive, unless you agree to something new.
- They may only use it for the same purposes described here.
- If they want to use it in a new way, such as a new kind of marketing, they must ask you first.
- We will tell you. We will email you and post a notice on this site. Where the deal allows, we will tell you before your information moves. Where it does not, we will tell you as soon as the deal is complete.
- You can say no. You can ask us to delete your information before it moves, or ask the new owner to delete it afterwards.
While a deal is being discussed, a possible buyer may need to review what we hold. They must sign a confidentiality agreement first. Where we can, we will show them grouped figures instead of anyone’s personal details.
The same promises apply if Dog Care Wiki closes or goes through bankruptcy.
7. How long we keep information
We keep your account, your dog’s profile and your care plan for as long as you use Dog Care Wiki, so your history and reminders are there when you need them.
If you ask us to delete your account or your information, we will delete it within 30 days, unless the law requires us to keep something.
A few things work differently:
- Phone verification codes are deleted once used, or after 10 minutes.
- If you unsubscribe, we keep a note that you did, so we do not email you again by mistake.
- Anonymized insights (see section 5.2) cannot be traced back to you, so they are not deleted with your account.
8. Your choices and rights
You can do any of these at any time, for free:
- See and edit your dog’s profile and care plan in your account.
- Unsubscribe from email with the link at the bottom of every email.
- Stop texts by emailing hello@dogcarewiki.com.
- Change your analytics and marketing choices with the button below.
- Ask what we hold about you, and get a copy you can take with you.
- Ask us to correct it.
- Ask us to delete it, including your whole account.
- Ask to be left out of anonymized insights (see section 5.2).
- Withdraw any consent you gave us.
This brings back the privacy banner, so you can pick again. Until you do, analytics and advertising stay off.
To make a request, email hello@dogcarewiki.com from the address on your account. If you write from a different address, we may ask a simple question to check it is you. We will reply within 30 days.
Depending on where you live, the law may give you more rights. This includes residents of California and other US states with privacy laws, and people in the European Union and United Kingdom. We give the rights above to everyone, wherever you live. Using them will never change how we treat you.
If you are unhappy with how we handled your information, please tell us first. You can also contact the privacy regulator where you live.
9. Children
Dog Care Wiki is for adults. We do not knowingly collect information from children under 13. If you think a child has given us their details, contact us and we will delete them.
10. How we protect your information
- Your dog’s profile and care plan sit behind your account sign-in.
- Information travels to and from our site over encrypted connections (HTTPS).
- Only the people who run Dog Care Wiki can reach our database.
- Bot protection on our forms.
- Phone verification codes and IP addresses stored only in scrambled form.
- Passwords and keys for our systems kept in secure secret stores, never in our code.
- Test copies of our site cannot save real information.
No system is perfectly secure. If a security problem puts your information at risk, we will tell you and the right authorities as the law requires.
11. Where your information is handled
Dog Care Wiki is a global company, and our providers handle information in several countries. Cloudflare runs a worldwide network. Brevo is based in France. Google and Meta are based in the United States. When information moves between countries, we rely on our providers’ standard legal protections for international transfers.
12. Changes to this policy
When we change this policy, we will post the new version here with a new date.
If a change is significant, especially anything about selling or sharing information, we will email everyone on our list at least 30 days before it takes effect. We will not apply a significant change to information you gave us before the change, unless you agree.
